From Marti Michell Logo

From Marti Michell

A popular teacher, Marti travels extensively, both in the states and internationally to teach. Look through your library of quilting books and you’ll surely find one of Marti’s books. At latest count, over 1.5 million books authored by Marti have been sold. Likewise, you undoubtedly have fabric, patterns or tools that she has designed in your collected sewing ma- terials. Furthermore, her influence in the quilting industry is enormous. During the Yours Truly years, 1972-1985, Marti “discovered” and she and Richard published and promoted into early prominence, quiltmaker/author/teacher personalities such as Mary Ellen Hopkins, Liz Porter, Marianne Fons, Harriet Hargrave, Susan McKelvey, Jean Wells, and Cheryl Bradkin.

It is no wonder that Marti Michell, the 2004 Silver Star Honoree at the Houston International Quilt Festival, is often introduced as a pioneer in the current quilt revival. Since 1995 the Michells have manufactured the From Marti Michell line of acrylic templates and specialty rulers for rotary cutting. The Silver Star is a prestigious “lifetime achievement” award. In 1991 she also received the first Michael Kile award given for commitment to creativity and excellence in the quilting in- dustry. Marti lives in Atlanta, GA, but was born and raised in Iowa. She received a B.S. in Textiles and Clothing and Home Ec Journalism from Iowa State University.

Pam Bono Designs

Pam Bono lives in Southwest Colorado with her husband and partner, Robert. The Bonos have two grown sons who are married.

Pam was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, where she began her career as a graphic artist in the late 60's, working as production manager for advertising agencies. During her spare time, she began designing crafts. As the advertising agency world was not appealing, Pam began her career as a craft and quilt designer in 1978, opening her own business called "Flying Fingers." The kits and patterns produced by her company were in every major chain store in the U.S.A.

The brand has produced several books for Leisure Arts, Block of the Month programs, and a tool called "The Angler™".

The Bono's developed a new website with designer Judson Nichols two years ago.  Their patterns are predominently downloads which saves quilters high printing costs and shipping.  Although the website is targeted towards members who enjoy hundreds of free patterns and instructional videos, non members are encouraged to purchase their work in the website Store.

Pam and Robert offer occasional workshops and lectures that are specifically designed to teach the Bono's innovative techniques, and sharpen machine piecing skills.

Quilt in a Day

Quilt in a Day

Since 1978, when Eleanor self-published that first book “Make a Quilt in a Day: Log Cabin Pattern,” she has become a prolific author, revered teacher trainer, popular television personality, and celebrated industry role model. She has au- thored over eighty additional books that sell at a rate of well over 6,500 per week. She has trained thousands of instructors throughout the world who teach her quiltmaking methods. In 1990, Eleanor pioneered the way people view quiltmaking with television. Her Quilt in a Day TV series began airing on PBS and is still broadcasting nationwide and abroad, even teaching in Japan. Adding to all of that, she has developed her own “Signature” fabric lines, several special edition sewing machines, and received numerous awards and recognition for her lifetime of achievements.

Even though Quilt in a Day is over thirty years old, it is so very contemporary. From the Internet to her ongoing sales of that first book, Eleanor continues to uniquely inspire thousand
of quilt makers worldwide everyday, one person at a time. Eleanor Burns and Quilt in a Day will always be a big part of the patchwork community. All the pieces of her life do work well together, so beautifully, bringing quiltmaking an inspir- ing presence that was meant to be. With the continued help of her son Orion and her sisters Judy and Patricia, she will keep bringing people into every stitch of her life, encouraging them step-by-step throughout her delightful patchwork path.

Rob Appell Designs

Rob Appell blends his love for the ocean with his work as a textile artist and designer. A few years ago, Rob landed a job in his Mother’s Quilt Shop, “The Cotton Ball” in Morro Bay, California. It was at The Cotton Ball where Rob found a fondness for Hawaiian shirt making. Shirt scraps make beautiful quilts, and so does Rob. He learned to quilt by trial and error, and definitely brings a masculine touch to this age old tradition. Most of his quilts bring the feel of artists Christian Lassen and Robert Wyland. Blending his fabrics from deep in the ocean to way up in the heavens, Rob’s quilts are 100% machine made and focus on applique work.

Rob has designed a fabric lines for Free Spirit Fabrics and Telegraph Road Studios. He has also appeared on "Simply Quilts", "Uncommon Threads", and "Behind the Seams". He also has an extensive line of Quilt Patterns for his original designs and a New Book - “Making Waves...The Adventures of a Surf Quilter.”
