This week’s Furry Friday post can be found right here on the Island Batik blog! Thanks so much for joining us!
Together with our fellow Piece for Shelter Pets sponsors, we’re featuring two furry friends each week for six weeks (we’re on week 3 right now), in hopes that we can bring attention to shelter pets in need of loving homes, and maybe even get a few of them adopted! This week’s adoptable pets are Tucker and Penny.
Nine-week-old fluffball Tucker might not hear perfectly, and his head tilts to the side on occasion, but we think that only makes him cuter. This happy, cuddly guy is available at Wine Country Animal Lovers in Calistoga, CA. Read more about Tucker, and see more adorable pictures here!
At 25 lbs., there’s lots to love about Penny — literally! This sweet tabby girl has peacefully coexisted with both cats and dogs, and now she’s waiting for her very own human diet buddy at Animal Haven in New York City. Read more about Penny, and see just how much there is to love, here!
The Piece for Shelter Pets (PFSP) initiative grew from the relationship started in 2012 between The Quilt Pattern Magazine and the Petfinder Foundation after Hurricane Sandy. The goal: to help animal shelters affected by the hurricane by making Kennel Quilts! Much like quilts are to us humans, Kennel Quilts offered rescued or displaced pets a warm, soft place to nap. They were such a big hit that The TQPM Kennel Quilt Team was officially started and since its beginning, has seen over 10,200 Kennel Quilts made and distributed to shelters across the United States and Canada! WOW!
Aurifil Threads has since joined the fun with multiple thread collections, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Petfinder Foundation. Two of those collections, Fifi and Fido and Happy Hounds were curated to match Island Batik Fifi and Fido and Happy Hounds fabric collections. A portion of proceeds from the sale of these fabrics are also donated to the Petfinder Foundation!
Through the efforts of some dedicated folks (we’re especially looking at you, Nan from Purrfect Spots Designs, who just so happens to be one of the Island Batik pattern designers!), the initiative has grown by leaps and bounds. We were thrilled to support the program with fellow sponsors Quilty Box, Benartex Fabrics, and Hancock’s of Paducah! Quilty Box has released a limited edition Kennel Quilty Box, with 100% (!!) of proceeds going to the Petfinder Foundation. Benartex has designed and released a print line, “The Joey Collection”, in honor of a rescue dog near and dear to their hearts. Hancock’s of Paducah is supporting the initiative by helping us all increase awareness of the program and the furry friends the program aims to support. THANK YOU to all of our sponsors, the Island Batik Ambassadors and everyone who has made and donated Kennel Quilts to local shelters and shelters in need.
How can YOU get involved and help a furry friend? ADOPT! Adopt from a shelter pet near you. OR, get to stithin’ and whip up your own Kennel Quilt or two (or 10 – once you start, it’s hard to stop)! If you’re making Kennel Quilts and sharing them online, make sure to tag your posts with the hashtags #kennelquilts and #tqpmkennelquilts. And of course, you can make a direct donation to the PetFinder Foundation or an indirect donation by purchasing any of the products mentioned above.
Thank you so much for joining us today! Stop by the Aurifil Blog next week for the next Furry Friday post!
