Do you love sugar skulls? They are part of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead, November 1st and 2nd) holiday that is held to remember loved ones who have passed away. Traditionally, sugar skulls (yes, made of actual sugar!) are decorated with bright colors and shapes and symbols that would have been significant to the deceased family member, then placed upon his or her grave. According to National Geographic, “Although most strongly identified with Mexico, Dia de los Muertos is celebrated throughout Latin America and everywhere with a Latino population, including Los Angeles, California…” Read more about the holiday here!
In recent years, the sugar skull motif has become mainstream, appearing in everything from Halloween candies to home goods to garments! Because of their colorful designs and rich history and cultural significance, it’s no wonder quilters have fallen in love with them!
Nine awesome quilters have teamed up to present the Fiesta de Azucar (“Sugar Party”) blog event! Each quilter has designed one block and collectively they have designed two border options that can go together to make a wall hanging (or pillows or table runners)! And of course, there will be prizes for quilters who participate in the event, too!
Here’s how the event works: Once a week from July 1 through August 26th, 2017 one of the 9 designers will release her skull design. On September 2nd and September 9th, two border designs will be released. The schedule is as follows:
The Blocks: Each block will be a 9″ X 12″ (9.5″ X 12.5″ unfinished) design with a sugar skull motif. Traditionally sugar skulls are made to honor a loved one who has passed and incorporate things relevant to that person. Some of the designers have chosen to do that, others just made cool skulls. You’ll be able to read each designer’s story about her skull during her week. Some are already giving sneak peaks on their blogs! Each block and border will be available for download on the specified day. There will be a nominal fee of $3.00 for each download.
The Sponsors: Each designer was provided with a palette of fabrics from the Island Batik Basics collection to make her block and was also given a whole lot of 12wt spools from Aurifil to use for embellishing! The bloggers have extras too! That’s your first clue about prizes…
Prizes: Did someone say prizes? Yup! Simply complete a project using at least one of the sugar skull designs and post a photo on the Facebook group page for a chance to win some great prizes. So far the designers have a gorgeous collection of 12wt Aurifil spools and a stack of fabulous fat quarters from Island Batik. The bloggers will be posting more prizes as they get them lined up and will draw for prizes on October 30, 2017, the day before Dia De Los Muertos begins.
Intrigued? Questions? Head on over to the Fiesta de Azucar Facebook group and join in on the fun. You can ask any questions you may have or just check out what everyone else has been working on. We’ll see you there!

It’s hard to believe that yet another Market has come and gone. Time sure does fly when you’re having FUN! We had a blast catching up with our customers – thank you to everyone who attended our Schoolhouse sessions or stopped by our booth!
Our designers rocked their Schoolhouse sessions – we’re talking standing room only! Nan Baker of Purrfect Spots Designs and the person leading the TQPM Small Kennel Quilt team joined Elizabeth of Island Batik, Erin of Aurifil, and other program sponsors to talk about the Piece for Shelter Pets initiative. Leah Day spoke on how quilt shops can teach Free Motion Quilting to their customers in one session, and gave another talk on publishing a book in the quilting industry with Christa Watson and Stephanie Palmer.
Tammy Silvers of Tamarinis held two great sessions, one about her Boho Bliss BOM and getting the most out of the program and another on how to cater to the beginner quilter. Jackie Kunkel’s Schoolhouse session focused on her Fresh Catch Signature Collection fabrics, new designer patterns, and coordinating Aurifil thread collection.
Didn’t make it to Market? You can still [virtually] visit our booth! Check out this booth tour from our industry partner, Aurifil. Elizabeth will walk you though each new Island Batik collection and a number of our new designer projects.
We loved giving lots of goodies away to those that entered and won during our #islandbatikmarket promo. Here are a few of our winners with their fabric bundles!

October is national Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month and some quilt industry professionals are partnering with the Petfinder Foundation to create awareness of Shelter Dogs (and Cats) that need “ furrever” homes. It is an unusual combination but one that is working beautifully to help our furry friends!
These quilt industry professionals are animal lovers and have partnered together to help shelter animals in ways that are new and unique. Join us in the Piece for Shelter Pets Blog Hop and see how we are helping and how you can help, too! Be sure to enter the hop giveaway before you leave – we’ve got lots of goodies up for grabs!
Sewing essentials are needed for Kennel Quilts and Aurifil Threads, Bernina USA, Island Batik Fabrics, Quilty Box and Benartex Fabrics have joined the TQPM Kennel Quilt effort to help the Petfinder Foundation.
Aurifil Threads created a Small Kennel Quilt Thread Kit last year and will be introducing two more Thread Collections, Happy Hounds and Fifi and Fido, at the International Quilt Market in Houston this month. A portion of sales goes to the Petfinder Foundation.
Bernina of America created a special edition Best Friends sewing machine this year featuring paw prints. They donated $30,000 to the Petfinder Foundation from the sales of the machine.
Island Batik is introducing two new animal fabric collections at International Quilt Market – Fifi and Fido and Happy Hounds! These collections are dedicated to the shelter pets adopted by members of the Island Batik family. Meet just a few of them below! A portion of sales goes to the Petfinder Foundation.
Quilty Box will offer special TQPM Kennel Quilt boxes and the Petfinder Foundation will be the recipient of a portion of their sales.
Benartex will introduce new fabrics at International Quilt Market which will benefit the Petfinder Foundation.
Island Batik and all of the other sponsors came together to join a larger effort to help our animal friends in times of need by doing what we love. We are reaching out to our quilting friends to ask for support and help for our furry friends.
There are so many shelter animals that want a home. This is a great time to check with your local shelter for your “furrever” friend or you can check out Petfinder. However if you can’t adopt at this time, there are numerous other ways to help and that will be shared on all our blogs. Please join us in this effort and Remember to Adopt –don’t shop!
Holly’s Adoption Story
“This is Holly, a four year old bloodhound. Holly came to us at 15 months old from a kill shelter in Alabama. Her back leg had been broken and mended without treatment so she walks kinda funny. She has had a skull fracture above her left eye so her eye is a bit wonky. She was completely emaciated and almost hairless from skin infection and mange. She has gained 50 pounds since and is doing very well. We think she’s absolutely beautiful! She is now our big, happy, 95 pound baby!” — Elizabeth Phillips, Island Batik
For the past 20 years, Petfinder has helped 25 million pets find their families through adoption. They wanted to use this moment to celebrate their incredible legacy with their shelter and rescue members while inspiring a new generation of pet lovers, just like you. They created a video and pledged to donate $200,000 to the Petfinder Foundation if the video reached 1 million views by October 24, 2016. Thanks to dedication and inspired help of the masses, they have already reached their goal! The donated funds will reward 20 shelter and rescue members with $10,000 grants, allowing them to keep doing the amazing work that they do!
The Piece for Shelter Pets sponsors have put together two awesome prize packages for you to win! Check them out and enter below!
